Gilmore | Henne Community Fund Achievements

Last year, the Berks County Community took a stand and made an investment in us. An investment that paid dividends throughout your community. We are optimists and what was accomplished in such a short amount of time still has us shaking our heads.
Accomplishments

2012 Accomplishments of the Gilmore | Henne Community Fund:

  • Named an Executive Director
  • Built a state-of-the-art adaptive community playground on the campus of Opportunity House in Reading (in conjunction with Berks Youth in Action and the IM ABLE Foundation) and revitalized the West Lawn Playground
  • Were chosen by the Lowes Heroes Program to be a part of both of our 2012 projects
  • Provided a grant to Blacktop, Inc.
  • Administered scholarships for two student athletes at Wilson High School
  • Were awarded a significant grant through our involvement with the Reading Youth Violence Prevention Partnership, funded by St. Joe’s Medical Center and Catholic Charities
  • Held a number of park programs including a Law Enforcement Luncheon and an Egg Hunt in the Park at Barbey’s Playground, and our 2nd Halloween in the Park at 2nd & Oley Playground
  • Earned Reading, PA’s designation as a Playful City USA for 2012
  • Were awarded a completion grant and a maintenance grant from Dr. Pepper, Snapple, and KaBOOM
  • Provided daily summer playground programming at both Barbey’s and 2nd & Oley Playgrounds including field trips to Adventure Aquarium and Crystal Cave
  • Hosted our 2nd Annual Peace on the Streets community event and basketball tournament at Barbey’s Playground in conjunction with Reading High Basketball and KTB (Kids that Ball)
  • Provided fall playground programming twice a week at Barbey’s and 2nd & Oley Playgrounds from September through October
  • Held community movie nights at 2nd & Oley, Barbey’s, West Lawn, and Temple Playgrounds
  • Hosted weekly community clean-ups at both Barbey’s and 2nd & Oley Playgrounds
  • Supported the 1st Tree Lighting at Temple Playground
  • Hosted a Holiday Party for our playground regulars with community members and GH volunteers and supporters “adopting” children for the party

2011 Accomplishments of the Gilmore | Henne Community Fund:

  • Revitalized Barbey’s Playground (in conjunction with the City of Reading) and Temple Playground (in conjunction with Muhlenberg Township Parks and Recreation)
  • Provided a grant to the Olivet’s Boys and Girls Club of Reading for their flag football league
  • Administered scholarships for two student athletes at Wilson High School
  • Held a number of park programs including a First Responders Luncheon at Barbey’s Playground and a Halloween in the Park at 2nd & Oley Playground
  • Hosted our 1st Peace on the Streets community event and basketball tournament at Barbey’s Playground
  • Provided daily summer playground programming at 2nd & Oley Playground
  • Hosted weekly community clean-ups at both Barbey’s and 2nd & Oley Playgrounds
  • Provided a skating party for our playground regulars and their families
  • Hosted a Holiday Party for our playground regulars with community members and GH volunteers and supporters “adopting” children for the party

2010 Accomplishments of the Gilmore | Henne Community Fund:

  • Revitalized one of Reading’s most dilapidated parks, 2nd and Oley
  • Held a number of park programs in conjunction with Olivet Boys and Girls Club
  • Provided a grant to the Olivet’s Boys and Girls Club of Reading for their flag football league
  • Started work on our 2011 project, Barbey’s Playground (working in conjunction with the City of Reading)
  • Administered scholarships for two student athletes at Wilson High School
  • Grant for Berks Parks and Recreation Department for the revitalization of Stone Cliff
  • NAACP recognized the Gilmore | Henne Fund with the 2010 Community Impact Award
